Abstract  On December 29, 2009, INMETRO approved Ordinance No. 371 about 
conformity assessment for household and similar appliances. This article introduces in 
detail the application scope, reference standards, conformity assessment process,
mark of conformity, testing laboratory and foreign bodies, treatment of claims and 
penalties of this regulation. 87 types of household appliances are covered in this 
regulation, but the appliances that are already covered by other assessment programs
are excluded. Covered products must meet the safety requirements of IEC 60335 or 
related ABNT NBR NM and NM standards transferred from IEC 60335. There are two 
types of compulsory certification:one is test and evaluation of the quality management
system; the other is batch certification system. The certification and tests should be
performed by the third party product certification bodies and laboratories accredited by
INMETRO.
